The Saturn Scientific and Production Association is realizing successfully the program for creation of the fifth generation aircraft engine which is intended for installation on a future aviation complex, which is being designed by the Sukhoy company.

“Development of the fifth generation engine is a central theme for us. I am absolutely convinced that if there will be financing in the volumes which have been prescribed in the draft budget for next year that we will be on the schedule which has been defined for us by the government,” the first deputy general director of NPO Saturn, Viktor Chepkin, said.

Answering an Interfax-AVN question, how will the fifth generation engine being developed by NPO Saturn differ from engines which are being installed on fighters of the Su-27 family today, V. Chepkin said that the only criterion that distinguished the engine according to generation is the specified weight or specific thrust. “The first generation engine produced 1 ? - 2 kilograms of thrust for every kilogram of weight. That is, if the engine weighed a tonne, then its thrust was approximately one and a half tonnes. The specific weight of the fifth generation engine is supposed to be no higher than 0.1. In other words, with a thrust of 10 tonnes, its weight is not supposed to exceed a tonne. All the rest are the means for achieving this goal,” V. Chepkin said.
