Royal Air Force Tests Top Secret Spy Plane

Posted 3-12-2005 at 05:23 PM

TOP secret high-altitude spy plane trials are being carried out by Royal Air Force scientists at Woomera.
The unmanned Zephyr 3 drone represents the next generation of spy planes.

It uses solar power and battery storage to remain in the stratosphere indefinitely sending images back to earth and carrying mobile communication signals.

Britain's Ministry of Defence confirmed the tests but said details of the plane's performance were classified.

Defence spokesman Christian Cubitt said: "I can say the work could take several months and the aim of the experiments is to test the viability of a (permanently) self-sustaining unmanned aircraft."

RAF scientists would try to break the record for high altitude unmanned flight this week.

The scientists, who arrived last week, are seeking to fly the Zephyr 3 at a record 40km above the earth.

NASA's space shuttle and experimental rocket planes are the only winged aircraft to have flown higher.

Mr Cubitt said details of the project were so secret if the plane breaks the record, it may not be made public.

Hardly "Top Secret!"

True enough. The brits can't keep a secret. :D
But hey, I couldn't find any photos anywhere.

Perhaps its invisible...
