TORONTO (AFP) - China's intelligence services are priming Chinese scientists and students to act as spies to steal Canadian technology and classified information, a report said.

The National Post newspaper said the Canadian Security and Intelligence Service (CSIS) warned that foreign spies were after the country's science and technology secrets in an annual report to parliament.

The paper quoted an unnamed "high intelligence source" as saying that China had been most aggressive in the illegal pursuit of sensitive data to be put to a military use.

Beijing's intelligence service use visiting scientists and students to obtain information from Canada's nuclear, aerospace, biotech, mining, metallurgy, environmental and oil and gas sectors, the paper said.

It named the China Defense Science and Technology Information Centre as the prime collector of Canadian and foreign technology.

China's government has made no secret of its desire for above board efforts to seek Canadian expertise and natural resources to slake the thirst for energy generated by the country's fast-developing economy.

State-owned energy companies are reportedly trying to buy Canadian oil and gas giant Husky Energy Inc. from Hong Kong tycoon Li Kashing.

The National Post report came just ahead of a trip to China next month by Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin, which includes talks with Chinese President Hu Jintao.
