KALAMAZOO -- A one-man show by aviation artist Rick Herter might happen in this southwestern Michigan town about as often as a visit from, well, Halley's Comet.

The comet's appearance occurs for earthlings about once every 76 years. And Herter's current paintings exhibit at the Air Zoo flight museum in Portage, near Kalamazoo, likely won't appear again here in the near future.

Gathering all the paintings for the "Art of the Skies" exhibit from the United States Air Force and Navy, the Pentagon, private collections and other areas was no easy task for organizers. But the hard work has paid off for aviation and art buffs. Herter's collection of 31 paintings graces the halls of the Air Zoo through Feb. 12. The exhibit's subject matter consists of military aircraft, general aviation aircraft and space vehicles.

Incidentally, Herter, 44, is the man who spearheaded the "world's largest indoor mural," which is on permanent display at the Air Zoo. "Century of Flight", the 32-by-800-foot mural, was painted by Herter and Tony Hendrick of Grand Ledge. The mural was certified by Guinness World Records to be the "World's Largest Indoor Mural."
