Floating craft no UFO, just Army blimp on test
The giant, sausage-shaped aircraft floating around Huntsville the past couple of days is not a massive threat from another planet.
Despite UFO reports to authorities and media Monday night, the 178-foot blimp used this week to demonstrate Army sensing equipment is not filled with
small, gray aliens. It will still be floating around the area through Thursday, so don't think "War of the Worlds" if you see it, said
Pam Rogers, an Army spokeswoman at Redstone Arsenal.
"I don't know why anybody would think this is a UFO," Rogers said. "It moves slow, but that's good" for the Army.
Blimps have been in use since World War I when they protected allied convoys, and lighter-than-air ships, or airships, have been in use for more than
100 years.
A slow-moving blimp can look down quickly on the bad guys. That's just what the Army is using them for in Afghanistan and Iraq, Rogers said. The
Army is using the blimp as part of its Huntsville-managed Joint Land Attack Cruise Missile Defense Elevated Netted Sensor System.
Most in the military familiar with the program just call it JLENS (pronounced JAY-lens).
"It has infrared and (advanced television) cameras that are used to look down and see the enemy," Rogers said.
Infrared sensors detect heat given off by warm bodies and structures.
Advanced television, or electro-optical, sensors can zoom in on a target miles away and help an operator identify it.
